BATON ROUGE, LA – The Pelican Relays returned to A. W. Mumford Stadium for the first time in 15 years and Southern University capitalized on the opportunity to host a meet.
Southern won seven different event titles and improved their positioning in every event.
Uzuri Graves, Kinzli Zenon and Karanay Alexander got things started in the women’s javelin. Graves won the event with a distance of 123 feet 7 inches. Zenon finished second at 108 feet 10 inches and Alexander finished fourth with a throw of 102 feet 6 inches.
Char’Vares Wilson set a new personal best in the men’s hammer with a distance of 165 feet 11 inches for a third-place finish. Kolby Mathews finished in sixth with his own personal best of 136 feet 7 inches. Lawrenee’ Hart set her own personal best on the women’s side with a throw of 160 feet 6 inches to finish fifth. A’ja Gore finished seventh with a throw of 151 feet. Schrell Chevalier had a distance of 135 feet 6 inches to finish ninth.
Wilson would come back to get a fourth place finish in the shot put with a distance of 49 feet 8.25 inches. Mathews would set a new personal best of 44 feet to finish eighth. Gore would finish in second on the women’s side with a throw of 41 feet 2.5 inches. Kori Jones would set a personal best of 32 feet 1.5 inches to finish sixth.
In the discus, Logan Lewis would finish second with a distance of 141 feet. Hart would finish third with a personal best of 135 feet 8 inches. Schrell Chevalierwould finish eighth with a distance of 120 feet 10 inches. Kaila Poole would set a new season best of 116 feet 1 inch to finish 10th. Wilson would get another personal best on the day with a throw of 140 feet 2 inches to finish seventh. Mathews would have his third personal best of the day with a throw of 132 feet 5 inches to finish eighth.
The men’s long jump saw Kevon Hamilton, Reginald Kingand Maliek Bush finish fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Hamilton finished with a season best 22 feet 3 inches. King jumped a personal best of 22 feet 1 inch and Bush finished with a distance of 21 feet 7.5 inches. Davonte White finished with a personal best of 21 feet 3.5 inches to finish 10th.
In the women’s long jump, Alexander would finish third with a new personal best of 17 feet 9 inches. Azariah Foster would finish fifth with a distance of 17 feet 7 inches.
Sahnya Lathon would take home seventh in the women’s high jump with a height of 4 feet 11.75 inches. Maliek Bush would finish with a season best 6 feet 2.75 inches to take home fourth on the men’s side.
Another event win would go to Southern in the women’s triple jump. Foster would set a new personal best of 39 feet 10.75 inches to take the crown. Lathon would finish second at 37 feet 10.5 inches and Yahria Bass would finish fourth at 37 feet 9.5 inches. Soteria Gibbs would finish eighth with her season best of 36 feet. Demarion Sowell would finish second with a personal best distance of 46 feet 4 inches on the men’s side and White would finish third with a jump of 45 feet 8.5 inches.
The running events for Southern started with the men’s 5,000 where Lafayette Collins and Zaire Blevins took the top two spots. Collins won the event with a new personal best of 16:20.61 and Blevins finished at 18:25.62.
The team of A’niya Galloway, Trinity Bolden, Trinity Kirkand Malaysia Sinegal took home the women’s 4×100 crown with a time of 46.87. The men’s team of Derick Washington, DeAnthony Nervis, Clydeterrious Thompsonand Austin Willis took home the crown with a time of 40.73.
Kashi Roberts picked up a sixth-place finish in the 1500 with a time of 6:10.87. Bryce Campbell finished with a personal best of 4:12.28 to finish third on the men’s side.
In the women’s 100m hurdles, Daisa McKissic, Sierra Session and Camille Lewis all finished inside the top 10. Mckissic finished fifth with a new personal best of 14.54. Sessions finished with her own personal best of 14.84 to finish sixth. Camille Lewis finished eighth with a time of 15.12.
The men’s 110m hurdles saw Devin Sowell, Terrell Chevalier and Hamilton finish in the top 10. Sowell and Chevalier set season best in the event. Sowell finished with a time of 15.21 for sixth while Chevalier finished at 15.42 to finish ninth. Hamilton finished ninth with a time of 15.61.
Kirk came back to take third in the women’s 400 with a time of 58.16.
Sinegal would take home third in the 100m with a time of 12.26. Clydeterrious Thompson would take the crown on the men’s side with a personal best of 10.46. Nervis would finish fifth with a time of 10.638, just 0.002 behind fourth. Washington would finish 10th with a new personal best of 10.80.
Camille Lewis picked up another win in the 800m with a new personal best of 2:14.5. Nicholas Scott finished second with a new personal best of 1:48.89. He was followed in third by Rushane Miller with a personal best of 1:49.99.
Sessions would take home second in the women’s 400m hurdles with a personal best of 1:02.47.
Bolden would sit out the 100m but would take home second in the 200m with a personal best of 24.41. Sinegal and Nadia Thomas would also get their personal best to finish in the top 10. Sinegal would finish sixth with a time of 24.95 and Thomas would finish ninth with a time of 25.56.
For the men’s 200m, Clydeterrious Thompson would finish second with a new personal best of 21.31. Rodney Johnson, Jr. would finish seventh with a personal best of 21.71. Washington had a time of 21.92 for a 10th place finish.
Simon, Kirk, Camille Lewis and Session would team up in the 4×400 to take second with a time of 3:48.24.
